The Ten StepsStep 02 - CarefulnessThe second step is that of carefulness. On our journey we need to be mindful of where we place our feet and of the direction in which we are going. We need to exercise caution in all our actions. We should deliberate over everything we do and be aware of those actions that are habitual and carried out without thinking. All activity (physical, mental, spiritual) needs to be assessed as to whether it is helping us along our path. The 613 precepts for the Jew and the seven Noachide Laws for the non-Jew form a suitable framework against which to judge whether our actions are positive or negative. Those activities that we consider to be positive need to strengthened and/or repeated. Those that we adjudge to be negative we need to actively avoid (but this is often easier to say than to actually do). It is recommended that a person sets aside some regular time for reviewing and assessing their actions against whatever moral and ethical criteria they adopt. |
