Zayin

The numerical value of Zayin is 7.

Zayin means "sword"

According to the Sepher Yetzirah, its correspondences are:

The number 7, associated with zayin, is a focal point. G-d created the world in 6 days and then rested on the Sabbath (seventh day). The activity of the first 6 days being focussed on the seventh.

In the Sepher Yetzirah we have the six cardinal directions (North, South, East, west, up, down) and in the centre a seventh point of stillness. This can be seen as exemplifying mankind's life in this material world. We are constantly having to balance the forces of the six directions, but in the centre there is a point of calm.

It is this point that we should be aiming for. This not a state of passivity, it is a state where we are actively balancing the external forces around us.
