Pe is a double letter associated with the path from Geburah to Hod. This dual nature is exemplified by the mouth and the sounds it makes. We can choose to use our voice, and hence our mouths, to strengthen our attachment to G-d or to weaken it. Kabbalah states that silence is a virtue and that idle talk is a negative act.

The power of words, because they employ the live giving element of breath, cannot be underestimated. Everything we say has an effect beyond the mere words themselves. Each word is an act of creation. Thus, if our words are negative we create negativity in ourselves, in those that hear the words, and throughout the universe. Conversely, positive words have a positive effect on the personal, interpersonal and universal levels.

The telling of a lie can effectively destroy the universe. A lie is the act of negating something that is. If that lie is said by enough people or with enough energy then what is ceases to be. As an example, a person's reputation can be irreparably damaged by a lie being started by one person and then it being given added energy by the actions of the media.

At the cosmic level lies affect the spiritual basis upon which this universe is formed. Each lie weakens the links between G-d and His creation.

Custom and practice has it that when a person studies the Torah they should actually speak the words. This act of speaking reinforces their power within the person (which at a very practical level helps them to learn the words) and their power throughout the universe. Studying the words by just reading them does have a positive effect, but it is much less than when the words are pronounced.
